Smallville Season 10 State of the Union

Smallville Season 10 State of the Union

Smallville-SupermanI can’t believe it has been 10 seasons, I remember when Smallville was the little show that could on the WB, staring a cast of unknowns delving into the mythology of Superman before he was Superman. The thing I am most impressed with is Tom Welling, he has grown into a fine actor, director and producer. Who remembers when Smallville first started and he only had about 3 facial expressions (surprised, sad and dumbfounded)?

As far as Smallville has come there are two things I miss most from those early seasons:

  1. The friendship and interactions with Clark Kent and Lex Luthor
  2. Jonathan Kent, he will forever be the heart and soul of this show.

OK, that enough of the trip down memory lane. There are too many great things to happen this season to look back too much. While not all of season 10 has been a homerun the good far out weighs the bad through the first half of the season.

So what has been good? A lot to say the least, we got a great scene in the first episode with Clark and Jonathan, setting the tone for the season. Some more good: Lois KNOWS! More importantly, Clark knows Lois knows. The chemistry between Welling and Erica Durance is what is keeping this show going, and honestly it could go for more with these two actors.

The other stand out bit of goodness for Smallville…. Green Arrow. Justin Hartley deserves his own series after his work on Smallville, hopefully it will be a Green Arrow series (but I won’t hold my breath).

Season 10 has featured some cool villains so far… Deadshot, Deathstroke, Ultraman, Desaad, Granny Goodness, even a shadowy Darkseid. Oh, and the “return” of Lex Luthor. Now, I know you are reading this thinking “Brian, what about Lionel Luthor”? And you are right to question this omission, but only because I haven’t gotten to him yet… but it’s coming.

How do you all feel about Chloe? I was always more annoyed with Lana Lang than Chloe Sllivan, and felt Allison Mack always brought more to the table for storytelling on Smallville than Kristin Kreuk as Lana. I’m missed Chloe for most of the season, I liked what was happening with she and Ollie, it really felt like she was moving on from Clark in a real way (not a “Jimmy” Olsen or Doomsday way).

I feel like this season has been a bit of a slow burn (and I like that), but things are coming to a head. There have been a few “tent” pole moments: Supergirl returning, Learning Darkseid can “infect” those not pure of character, Meeting Aquaman’s wife Mera, The introduction of General Slade Wilson (aka Deathstroke the Terminator), JSA and JLA team ups, Brainiac 5 comes back from the future to set things right, Finding out Tess Mercer is actually a Luthor, Earth-3 Lionel Luthor makes his way to our Smallville and finally, the death of Hawkman.

So in closing this final season has lived up to the Hype, hopefully we will get a nice pay off with a smackdown between Darkseid and Superman. Even if that doesn’t happen we’ve had 10 solid season of new Superman mythology mixed with the old. I trust everyone involved with creating Smallville to give us a satisfying ending and I can’t wait for the last bit of this 10 year ride.

It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s
