Last month I was able to enjoy rare treat, the busy father, husband, grad student, worker drone and all around good geek; I was able to make it a double feature day at the movies. My movie day started with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and ended with The Expendables. Now I throughly enjoyed both very different movies, but if I had to suggest one to go see I would recommend Scott Pilgrim over the Expendables.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a fun solid movie wonderfully directed by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shawn of the Dead) and sported a spot on cast lead by Michael Cera (Superbad, Arrested Development) in the title role of Scott Pilgrim. The film is full of heart and creativity. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a true to source material telling of a pretty great take on the boy meets girl story. Of course the boy much fight the 7 evil exes to get the girl, but it is still a fresh take on boy meets girl.
The Expendables on the other hand is derivative, unoriginal and predictable. For a movie titled the Expendables, it is kind of funny that at no point in the movie do you feel like any of the main heroes are in any jeopardy to be expended. Don’t get me wrong… I didn’t hate the movie. I did enjoy the balls out action and I did really enjoy a the “a-splosions”. When it comes down to choosing between the two movies though, my choice has been stated.
I will definitely be making the Blu-Ray purchase of both films, but for the first few weeks Scott Pilgrim will most likely be on a nice repeat loop.
