Apple has gone and done it, they announced the upcoming release of their newest “game changer” – the iPad. The iPad is Apple’s latest gadget to create a ton of buzz long before the product hits the tables of the Apple Stores. At first glance the iPad seems to be a marvel of technology, I mean really it is pretty much a Padd from Star Trek. However, If you look a little deeper you see what looks revolutionary is nothing more that a regular old upsize.
Now in all fairness I want to make it perfectly clear, I’m an Apple fanboy, I have 2 iPods, 2 iPhones an iMac and a Macbook Pro, so I’m as far for unbiased as one can be when it comes to Apple and their products. So when I say I’m not interested in getting an Apple tablet that is basically a large version of my iPhone you have to understand how much that pains me. When I heard Apple was releasing a multi-touch tablet I was very excited, right up until I saw the final product I held out hope the iPad (and oh how I hate that name) would be something more like the Nokia Booklet 3G, only with a swivel multi-touch screen. Then my hopes were dashed.
Now the iPad is not all bad, except for the name of course, it is obviously much like the Original iPhone (or 2G if you will), it is the first step in many iterations to come. So in three years when the iPad has become closer to something I would be interested in purchasing it will include features like a camera, a microphone, an SD slot and a USB port. Oh, and on a side note Apple please get Flash for the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch soon.
Now while people out there are drooling over the iPad, I understand. Of course if you want to protect your iPad you need to add a case and there all the extras like a USB port to plug into the 30 pin slot. Lets not forget about the dock and keyboard you can by for the iPad too… so it’s like a laptop but it doesn’t fold to protect your screen.
So let us talk price points:
|Wi-Fi + 3G||$629||$729||$829|
- Prices in U.S. dollars. International pricing will be announced at a later date.
- 3G data plan sold separately.
Ok, so for $629 you can get a 16GB WiFi + 3G iPad…. theeeeeenn you have to pay AT&T up to $30 a month for the 3G… how is this worth it? So if you have an iPhone 3G or 3Gs and a 3G iPad you will be paying $60 bucks a month for an AT&T network that most people hate.
As you can guess I will not be purchasing an iPad, the price is outrageous for something that is nearly un-customizable (unless there is a jailbreak… and you know there will be). If you are in the market for a small portable computer I would suggest the Nokia Netbook 3G or even the iBook, but unless you want to play incredible shrinking you and take pictures of yourself with the iPad like a giant iPhone, go right ahead.
